Norwegian Fish Oil – Is It Really The Best?

Norwegian fish oil has become one of the most widely used and popular types of fish oil over the years.

(This is because of the supposedly high quality content of the oils that are found in the ocean around Norway).

By now, we are all aware of the benefits omega 3 gives us (unless you have been living under a rock for the past decade), but what is so good about this particular type of fish oil?

In this article will discuss fish oil from Norway, the benefits, the drawbacks and the product I personally use with excellent health results.

The Environment

The waters off Norway are said to have less industrial waste and pollution, so this means that the fish found in them are much cleaner and safer for us to consume. Many other ocean areas of the world will contain fish that have been contaminated by many forms of toxins. PCB’s and heavy metals such as mercury, lead and iron can be found in the fish and these substances can be very dangerous for our health. For this very same reason, pregnant women are strongly advised to avoid eating fish (this is due to the toxins potentially being passed to their baby’s). However, many of today’s fish oil supplements will have been molecularly distilled to remove any such toxins.

Problems With Fish Farming

In Norway However, (desptie some of the positive points mentioned above), in recent years fish farming has become extremely common in Norway, and although this is very good for the fresh fish market, it has an opposite effect on the fish oil market.

The fish that come from these farms will harbor much less of the omega 3 oils (this is because the fish are now fed with pellets instead of them eating the fresh ocean algae). This all results in a lower quality of fish oil and a decrease in the benefits it can give us.

So when looking to purchase Norwegian fish oil, try and discover if the fish were wild or from fish farms.

Fish Varieties

Omega 3 will be found in most fish types, and you may expect the larger fish to contain more. However, this is actually not true. The larger fish will generally feed by eating smaller fish. The fish that have more omega 3 are the fish that feed primarily on algae.

Fish such as salmon, tuna and hoki are the most common sources used by fish oil companies.

Tuna and Salmon are the best fish to be used as Hoki fish are becoming harder and harder to sustain.

When a larger mix of fish is used, the quality of the fish oill will almost suffer.

Below is my criteria for making sure I consume quality fish oil and get my moneys worth.

1) The type of fish used – are there to many types of fish being used, or is just one or two quality fish species? (To many fish used for the oil is not a good sign).

2) Has the fish oil been purified – a process called molecularly distilled is now the standard for the industry. You should not anything less when it comes to your fish oil.

3) Is the fish caught near (locally) to where the fish oil is produced. If the fish are caught to far away, rancidity is a major concern.

4) Does the product tell you the break down (clearly) between the amount of DHA and EPA, and just the amount of omega 3 used. Research has shown that you should use a fish oil that has a high ratio of EPA to DHA for optimal health results.

5) How many services does the fish oil contain per bottle?

6) is there a certificate of analysis on file to show the potency and purity of the fish oil you are about to buy? If none of the above are shown or are clear, steer away and err on the side of caution.

What Fish Oil Product Do I Use?

The Cream Of The Crop Fish Oil…. After doing many comparissons and researching the omega 3 market, there’s a fish oil supplement I personally use that ticks of all my criteria mentioned above. And here’s why…

1. It is made from the fish species called salmon and tuna. Both of these fish are a sustainable, natural resource regulated by the New Zealand government (Unlike the dangered Hoki species). They thrive natively in the cold, deep ocean waters off the Southern coast of New Zealand.
